Women in Vedas

यथेमां वाचं कल्याणीमावदानि जनेभ्यः।
ब्रह्मराजन्याभ्यां शूद्राय चार्याय च स्वाय चारणाय॥
How I shared these valuable words without my surveillance towards discrimination, I request all of the listeners and the observers to share these words with each male and female without paying attention if they are Brahmins, Chettri, Baisyas, Sudras, someone from a foreign land or even with someone from a foreign planet.

A dispute about women’s eternal rites is very common. Other religious opportunists have accused Hindu religion of discrimination against women. By creating this dispute and with a very little knowledge about Hindu religion, criticism and bad speeches are being put on this tradition. Let’s make a little shrink today whether women really have been immersed in Vedic lesson and what exactly does the scripture say?

Various concepts and facts have been heard including women are not allowed to do Veda text and if done have to face consequences. But we make our assumptions based only on things we heard somewhere or superficial works, not by reaching its depth. Remember that only women should read Tandey Brahmin Mantra in Vedas. This act of devoting a whole Mantra for women already shows the high position of women in Vedas. The Hindu Times has also repeatedly stated there is no such gender discrimination in The Veda. The ideas like reading Veda affects the fertility of women and creates burden has also been put forward when there is no truth it such statement. It has been clearly written in Shukla Yajurveda that Ved holds equal position for both male and female.

When we look at Atharva Veda, it teaches the various uses of medicinal herbs for enhancing health and fitness. This shows that the role of women in family and hospitality has already been embraced by Atharva Veda. Various studies have also found that women have been reading Veda even handedly from the very beginning. Various researches have written that due to the Manusmriti sutra in 2000 BC, some limitations were drawn. On this topic of Manusmriti and Purana, we want to present similar views of Swami Bibekananda.

Manusmriti and Puranas are the knowledge of men with fewer knowledge of integrity. It has many abbreviations, discrimination and errors. The Gitas and Vedas are the true eternal books.
Eventually the time has come when we start reading Bhagwat Gita and Vedas rather than Puranas and mythologies. Manusmriti means books written on the basis of things heard and remembered. Religious books are also written on the basis of memory. The word ‘Smriti’ means remembering and the word ‘Shruti’ means listening. The books that are written on this basis of things heard thousandss of years ago are different. There is high chance that the writer uses own beliefs and opinions instead of facts.

Krishna Bhatt, the vice principal of AcharyaKulam of Haridwar has said that he taught his wife Veda after marriage. On his interaction with Hindu Times, he clearly said his wife has attained Masters in Sanskrit and Veda after marriage. According to him the AcharyaKulam of Haridwar is not bias to its students and gives fair share of knowledge to every student of any religion or any tribe. He also said how Veda wisely teaches about the plant, directions, gravity and the universe.

The section 26 of Yajurveda13 has also put light in the same thing. Addressing women, it says that women are unbeatable by any challenge or assault and have enormous power which can defeat any other frightening power. One woman has the capacity of thousands of people. All women need to do is identify their capability and move ahead. The world has expected women to have unusual courage and immense power is well defined by this verse in Yajurveda.

Again in the Brahmacharya Sukta in 8th section of section9 of chapter 11 of Atharva Ved, women are encouraged to gain education in the same manner as men. This verse has showcased male female equality in an astonishing way. This was a sharp answer for the fingers raised on our traditions.
Women are potrayed as source of immense knowledge and source of full knowledge of actions in the 9th subsection of 47th section of 7th chapter in Atharva Veda.

With regard to respect and honor, women in Veda have been given the status of a god. If every little detail observed, Vedas can be taken as wave and source of equality and harmony. The fascinating things that women do not read Veda are only confusion and misconceptions. Both men and women are welcome to the sea of Veda knowledge.
